Competitions and Activities

We have several competitions running in the new 2012 brochure with fantastic prizes.  If you have not yet received the new brochure then you can get your copy now from your local centre, or you can visit the publications page (link) to see what opportunities are available near you.

Somerset Crossword Competition

We are running a crossword competition in which the answers are all about the beautiful county we live in.  Have a go now to see how much you know or can find out about Somerset.

First prize in our Somerset Crossword Competition is to have a stunning portrait drawn by Somerset portrait artist Steve Mahn (www.stevemahn.co.uk).

Steve attended once of SS&L's drawing classes and has gone on to set up his own portrait business.

He also draws caricatures or portrait sketches at live events, such as weddings or birthday parties.

Steve has kindly offered to draw a free portrait as a prize for our Somerset Crossword Competition.  The portrait could be of the competition winner, a family member or a friend.  Commissions are available from Steve and you can contact him through his website. Why not ask him in person when he will be exhibiting at the following events in 2012:

  • Exeter Comic Expo.  Sunday 19th February. Rougement Hotel

  • Cardiff International Comic & Animation Expo.  February 25th - 26th.  Holland House Hotel

  • Bristol Comic Expo. May 11th - 13th.  Ramada Hotel & Temple Meads Engineer's Shed

  • Kapow London. 19th - 20th May. London Business Design Centre

To be in with a chance of winning this prize, complete our Somerset themed crossword competition and send it back by 14th February 2012.  You may need to do a bit of research to get the answers to some of the clues.

If you would like to brush up on your computer skills to help you in the research, then check out our range of IT classes available near you, including the BBC First Click short course that you can join for free!

Poetry Competition

Somerset is a very beautiful county to live in and we are inviting you to put pen to paper and write a poem or short prose about Somerset.

You can gain inpiration from any aspect of the county you choose; its rich history, its beautiful countryside, its shores or its people.  Tell us in poetic form what it is that you enjoy about living in Somerset!

The top five entries will be illustrated and printed onto postcards.  The overall winner from the top five will also receive a £50 learning voucher which can be redeemed against all Somerset Skills & Learning courses and workshops as part of full payment.

The winning entry will be chosen by a panel of SS&L tutors on or after the closing date which is the 29th of February 2012.

Entries need to be 250 words or fewer in length and need to be accompanied by your authorisation for Somerset Skills & Learning to re-print them (on our website, in future publications and onto the postcards), along with confirmation that the entry is of your own composition.  The author will retain ownership of the poem.  Example authorisation could read:

"I (your name) hereby confirm that this poem is all my own work, and I authorise Somerset Skills & Learning to use my poem as required."

To enter, send your poem to Ade Bowen by email, abowen@somerset.gov.uk or post to Somerset Skills & Learning, Princess Street, Burnham on Sea, TA8 1EH.

All winning entries will be posted on this page.

Somerset Skills & Learning offer Creative Writing Courses across the county to help you exercise your written creativity.  Please use our Coursefinder tool to find your nearest available course.
