Somerset Skills and Learning
.

Unemployed and need help getting back into work or are you returning to learning?

Did you know that Somerset Skills & Learning has a range of opportunities for people who want to think about going back to work after a period of time or some focussed work preparation for unemployed people?

Our team of careers advisers is running a programme called Ways into Work. The short programmes will help you to:

  • value your past experience
  • write a CV
  • learn how to do a job application on the internet
  • find out about IT training
  • find out about new jobs
  • brush up your English and maths

Paul was a learner with us and whilst he was on programme he achieved more than he ever thought he was able to. Paul is now in work with a clutch of new qualifications.  Paul says:

‘Without the help and support

of Kate, my careers adviser,

I would never be back in work,

still doing my voluntary work

and enjoying every day’

Book an appointment with a careers adviser to find out about Ways into Work and ensure that you start the right programme for you.  This might be the Work Club, an accredited employability programme or an English or maths brush up.

Call 01278 426 828 for details of a course in your area.

If you have been away from the workplace for a while, you might want to regain your confidence.  In this case Make Your Experience Count is for you!

The short course helps you to value your existing skills, appreciate new ones you have gained through experience and identify new ones to help prepare for the work place. People who have completed Make Your Experience Count say that it ‘gives them space to make decisions to move on with confidence and decide what they want to do in the future’.

You might think that volunteering is good preparation for work.  We run ‘Volunteering with Children & Young People’ and also ‘Volunteering in Your Community’. These courses help you to focus on your skills to use in voluntary settings and to help you to find out about opportunities in your chosen organisation.

‘Whilst on placement I learnt a lot about the structure of my voluntary organisation and the purpose of the policies and guidelines that govern it. I have refreshed my literacy and numeracy and gained a recognised qualification. I have discovered that learning is fun and I feel more confident to do more in the future’.

So whether it’s employability skills or volunteering in your community setting, contact our Careers Advisers who will be able to advise you and help you to organise your new opportunities in learning.  Don’t delay, call us today on 01278 426 828 and we will get back to you.
