Funded through the Transformation Fund.
The project will close at the end of March 2010.
Overall the project aims to:
-
Involve adults in informal learning - Learning for pleasure, discovering new things, building skills / knowledge. The idea is to bring people and local communities together through involvement in learning. (Opportunities for learning will be linked under the 'Sustainability theme' e.g. Health and Well Being, gardening, DIY, furniture renovation, recycled art, conservation etc)
-
Promote Community cohesion by making available SS&L centres in 5 key locations (Ilminster, Williton, Wellington, Glastonbury and Burnham on Sea) more accessible to the local community and the V & C Sector as part of the 'Open Space' movement. This means these centres will be available for community use for local groups, clubs etc. (This does not mean our centres will be open all weekend - the Open Space programme will be planned and will be subject to staff availability)
-
Promote collaborative working between SS&L, Voluntary and Community groups and the 'Transition Town' movement. (Transition Towns is about local people and communities working together towards a sustainable society).
-
Widen participation in learning through targeted projects and a voucher system for specific 'taster' learning activities. There will be a willow art project, a Glastonbury Abbey medicinal garden 'Family Learning' project and a 'MEND IT' project.
-
Continue to develop alternative ways of learning - e learning materials, an online community forum, radio broadcasts from centres, video conferencing etc.
-
Provide training linked to sustainability such as social enterprise training and 'Transition Town' education
Additionally, the project will
- Pilot activity in the five centres as above with a view to using the model framework developed to implement similar work in other centres.
-
Build the legacy of a sustainability mind set by upskilling individuals and groups to identify community issues and empower them to address those issues through e-learning, electronic information sharing and collective and positive action.
